The Sounding Body: Breath Meditations and Vocal Expressions
A Unique Approach to Somatic-Expressive Dance
with Jamie McHugh, MA, RSMT of Tamalpa Institute (USA)
"Express yourself completely, then keep quiet." - Tao te Ching
Breathing is the primary core movement of your body and the first way life moves inside you. Vocalization is your exhale made audible with vibration and the first way your nature is outwardly expressed. Both are fundamental tools for a healthy, expressive being - enlivening your body, quieting your mind, and leading you into spontaneous, nourishing and pleasurable movement.
Being anchored in your breath and its vocal expression is essential for restoring your original grace as a body of nature. Breathing is the “good mother” of the soma. Basic reassurance is evoked by the inner contact created by your own breathing. You are safe here. When the movement of the breath freely sweeps up and down your torso without extraneous tensions, you can feel the pleasure of your own being. Similarly, vocalization is the “good father” of the soma. It helps you move out into the world with confidence for taking up space and expressing yourself. You are seen here. Vocalization liberates your soma from the strictures of withheld expression.
In a safe, creative, and playful environment, we will explore a full range of breath and sound practices - from meditative/inner sound to expressive/outer sound. These practices give you access to deep stillness and subtle inner movement. By giving yourself “breathing room”, settling into your interior, and orchestrating sound/movement articulations, you are able to discover and free your own transformative dance and song.
No experience necessary – suitable for all levels of participation.

Since beginning this work with Jamie I have found myself breathing much more expansively. Often at the end of a class I feel as if I’ve just taken a great nap, had a really good cry or laughed until I was breathless. Having luxuriated in my senses, oxygenating and circulating, I feel greatly relaxed and yet strangely energized, as if I have left my personality on the floor or dissolved into the ether, released into a state of calm awareness. I experience a tender vulnerability, intimate human connection, expression and release, and moments of stillness that feed my day-to-day life outside the class. – Candace, Massage Therapist/Minister
“As a gay man who’s body shame often comes into play, learning to first listen to and follow my body's impulses is empowering. Where caution is often the norm, Somatic Expression impacts my ability to feel and to be powerful. Doing this work in a room of others, the balance between feeling separate and wanting to be separate gets repeatedly challenged. This challenge has taught me flexibility for being in relationship with myself and others." - David, Realtor
“I moved from an intellectual understanding of the Somatic Body to one of integration. I learned to allow the sensory experience to run its course through my body while simultaneously being a witness to it. I was able to sit inside of the sensory experience fully and with awareness, to allow it to be as opposed to judging it, controlling it, or using it against another. As a result of Jamie's teaching, I have been able to begin to heal from years of depression and dis-ease."
